The Madhhab
What is a Madhhab?
A madhhab is a framework built by a group of scholars upon a particular methodology. The Ḥanafī madhhab is the framework established by Imām Abū Ḥanīfah, his students and their companions.
The Ḥanafī methodology is a direct inheritance from the Ṣaḥābah and the Tābiʿūn: from amongst the Ṣaḥābah, ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd and ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā; and from amongst the Tābiʿūn, ʿAlqamah, Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, Ḥammād and, of course, Imām Abū Ḥanīfah himself.
Al-Imām al-Aʿẓam
Imām Abū Ḥanīfah raḥimahullāh is known by the title al-Imām al-Aʿẓam, the Greatest Imām. Though it may seem merely honorific, the title was given because of his great character, his devotion as a worshipper of Allah subḥānahu wa taʿālā, his great trustworthiness and, most importantly, his connection to Rasūlullāh ﷺ through the ḥadīth:
مَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ
“Whomsoever Allah wishes good for, He grants him understanding (fiqh) of the religion.”1
Faqāhah is often translated simply as “understanding.” But understanding of what? It is that deeper understanding of the fundamentals of the laws of Allah subḥānahu wa taʿālā. Imām al-Shāfiʿī raḥimahullāh commented on this when he said:
النَّاسُ عِيَالٌ عَلَى أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ فِي الْفِقْهِ
“In fiqh, all people are dependants of Abū Ḥanīfah.”2
Why it Matters
As a Muslim, I need to be sure that I am following the laws of Allah subḥānahu wa taʿālā as they are, in a manner with which the Divine is pleased. For that, I need full conviction in how the law has been interpreted and explained.
By following the Ḥanafī framework, a person can have full conviction that they are walking in the footsteps of their pious predecessors, with clear and resolute guidance in their acts of worship, their dealings with others, their social matters and, ultimately, their relationship with Allah the Almighty.
The Ḥanafī Chain
The Ḥanafī chain does not begin with Imām Abū Ḥanīfah. It begins with Rasūlullāh ﷺ.
Rasūlullāh ﷺ taught his Ṣaḥābah, encouraged them to think matters through, and to ask those who knew when they did not know. In his own lifetime he raised a group of scholars from amongst the Ṣaḥābah, and among them was the famous Companion ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu. The whole of the Ḥanafī tradition flows from him: he was the teacher of ʿAlqamah, who was the teacher of Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī, who was the teacher of Ḥammād, who was the teacher of Abū Ḥanīfah.
- Rasūlullāh ﷺ
- ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd
- ʿAlqamah
- Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī
- Ḥammād
- Imām Abū Ḥanīfah
The chain begins with Rasūlullāh ﷺ and reaches Abū Ḥanīfah, but it does not end with him. Imām Abū Ḥanīfah raḥimahullāh is the one who organised this inheritance into a framework, in such a way that every person after him could benefit from it and apply it in a sound and beneficial manner.
